Is a Smoke Detector a hidden camera?

Why it's usually nothing
Every room legally needs one, and most hotels and rentals have several — so a smoke detector is the single most common hiding spot precisely because it never looks out of place.
The tell that actually matters
Compare it to the others in the unit. Builder-installed detectors are identical, level, and evenly spaced. One that’s a different brand, a different white, mounted slightly lower, or angled a few degrees toward the bed instead of straight down is the one worth a closer look. A tiny hole in the case that isn’t part of the speaker grille or the strobe is a definite tell.
The power check
Legitimate detectors run on a 9V battery or hardwired power with no visible cable. A cable running to a "smoke detector" from an outlet is not normal.
