Is a Desk Lamp Or Nightstand Lamp a hidden camera?

Usually not. Here's the specific thing that separates an innocent one from one worth a second look.

Why it's usually nothing

Standard furniture in almost every rental and hotel room, and it needs to sit at a working height on a desk or nightstand — which happens to be an ideal, unremarkable spot for a wide view of the room.

The tell that actually matters

Lamp-cameras are a real, widely sold product built into the base or the housing around the bulb, and they still work as a normal lamp so nothing about the light itself gives it away. Check the base and any grille or vent openings for a lens-sized dot that isn’t part of the lamp’s own design, and run the Chapter 4 flashlight-glint pass across it. A lamp aimed at the bed rather than at a desk or reading chair — where a lamp is actually useful — is the placement tell that matters most here.

The power check

It has to stay plugged in to work as a lamp at all, so power alone tells you nothing — the useful check is the Chapter 6 Wi-Fi scan, since a lamp-camera has to join a network to stream video and shows up as an unexplained device, often with a generic or camera-brand name.

This is one object out of the full 90-second sweep. If anything here is positive, run the flashlight lens pass on it before doing anything else.
